This year our class is taking on the challenge of trying to solve some of the issues that have plagued our globe over the past twenty years. This page is designed to record our journey along the way as well as serve as a dumping ground for any information that we may come across as we begin and continue to research a possible solution.

Global Issue #1:

The following document will serve as a template for you to follow as you go along and begin organizing you information.

Solving the Issues of the World…One Friday at a Time

Group Names: Meredith Williams and Adair Sawyer

Global Issue #1: Homelessness

Background of Issue: (who?, what?, where?, when?, why?)

Who: The homeless people and everyone

What: homelessness- when someone does not have enough money for everyday needs so they either have to live outside and fend for themselves.

Where: Mostly very where, a big problem throughout the United States
external image homeless-map.gif

When: It became a big problem in the 1980's (in the united states)

Why: Either they choose to be homeless or they must become homeless due to financial reasons.
It is rare that a person would become homeless for just one reason, however, poverty is a common thread among nearly everyone who experiences homelessness. Whether the reason is situational (like outstanding medical expenses) or generational (coming from a poor family living in an already impoverished area), falling below the poverty line makes a household vulnerable to becoming homeless. According to 2010 Census data, 14.3% of people nationwide are living in poverty.

Costs: human and/or financial cost?:
It wouldn't cost people really anything if you are just donating items you don't even use to people that really need them. Because instead of just throwing it away you are giving those items a bettter use plus it doesn't cost you anything! But, if you are starting a homeless shelter or soup kitchen it would cost A LOT of money. One, you have to pay to build everything and buy all supplies. We are not building a homeless shelter or soup kitchen so if everyone could donate their old jackets or blankets or anything the homless rate might decrease.

Previous Efforts Put Into Place to Help Resolve Issue:

People have tried many times to stop this problem. They have opened soup kitchens and homeless shelters for the people to have food and shelter. Another thing that people try to do is that they will donate their items for the homeless people. Also schools and other associations will hold canned food drives that they will donate.

Reasons why previous efforts to help resolve issue have failed:
A reason to the failed previous efforts have failed might be to due to the fact that they were trying to change such a big area when they should just work in little areas and get more done and have a better outcome. Also maybe people did not want to cooperate so they should try different things for different areas and see what works the best.

Areas of concern on reaching your desired solution to the global issue:
The United States. We are going to find out information about the many different problems of homelessness in the U.S. We are going to see what these states are doing to cause homelessness and look at the similarities and differences and why this is. We are concerned because it is such a big issue in the United States we are going to focus on certain areas.

YOUR PLAN OF ACTION! (for this section, you will need to provide the most detail as you lay a step-by-step plan on how your group will go about tackling this issue. It is important that you take a look at all the information you have researched and studied and use that information to develop a true, realistic and effective plan of action. The plan needs to include funding, people involved, time length of project, materials needed, etc…)
